This link connects to a presentation given by Jan Sharik Baker at the 2022 SHIPLEYS OF MARYLAND Annual Meeting and Luncheon, which was held on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Hellas Restaurant and Lounge in Millersville, MD. Jan's presentation is entitled “Joined by Time and Circumstance: The Connection of the Shipley Line to the Historic Benson-Hammond House.” Jan is lead docent and museum curator for the Ann Arrundell County Historical Society (AACHS). She has also been a board member, officer or member of several genealogical organizations in addition to AACHS, including the Baltimore County Genealogical Society, the Odenton Genial Genealogists, and the Maryland Historical Society, now called the Maryland Center for History and Culture. Her Benson ancestor immigrated to Jamestown from England in the early 1630s. Her Todd and Cromwell ancestors were connected to Todd’s Inheritance at North Point; her Dorsey and Ridgley ancestors, to Hampton Mansion in Towson; and her Larkin and Holland ancestors were innkeepers at London Towne, all in Maryland. These names should be familiar to Shipleys. Jan’s presentation gives the history of the house, one of the primary facilities of the AACHS, and shows the relationship of the Shipleys to the Bensons and Hammonds as well as other early Maryland families associated with the house. One of the more recent connections is E. Roderick Shipley, M.D., a past Shipleys of Maryland President and past AACHS President who took on the house as his “patient” in the 1970s after diagnosing the seriousness of the building’s forlorn look and fading exterior. His leadership led to the renovation of the house for AACHS. Jan shares images from her collection of very old photos.
